Math Vocabulary 11-14-11

  • standard form -- Another name for "Scientific Notation", where a number is written in two parts: * First: just the digits (with the decimal point placed after the first digit), * Followed by: ×10 to a power that woul
  • quanity -- How much there is of something. Example: What is the quantity of rice? You could say "a handful", or you could even count them "1262" !
  • area -- The amount of space inside the boundary of a flat (2-dimensional) object such as a triangle or circle.
  • equivalent -- Having the same value. Examples: 1 Dollar is equivalent to 100 cents, 120 seconds is equivalent to 2 minutes.
  • rounding -- Rounding means reducing the digits in a number while trying to keep it's value similar. The result is less accurate, but easier to use. This is the common method: * Decide which is the last digit to
  • product -- The answer when two or more numbers are multiplied together.
  • composite -- A Composite Number can be divided evenly by numbers other than 1 or itself.
  • value -- The result or 'output' of a calculation. Example: 3 × 4 gives the value of 12.
  • pattern -- Things that are arranged following a rule or rules. Example: there is a pattern in these numbers: 2, 7, 12, 17, 22, … The rule is "start at 2 and add 5 each time"
  • variable -- A symbol for a number we don't know yet. It is usually a letter like x or y. Example: in x + 2 = 6, x is the variable.
  • prime -- A Prime Number can be divided evenly only by 1 or itself.
  • digit -- A symbol used to make numerals. 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and 9 are the ten digits we use in everyday numbers.

  • Hypothesis -- An idea or question that can be tested.
  • Investigation -- A process designed to answer a question.

  • Predict -- Determine what you think will happen when you do an experiement before you do the experiement.
  • Pizza -- A dish of Italian origin consisting of a flat base of dough baked with a topping of tomato sauce and cheese, typically with added meat.
  • Variable -- A part of an experiment that is changed.
  • Theory -- A well-supported explanation for something that occurs in nature.
