Solubility

  • solvent -- A substance that dissolves a different substance
  • saturated -- A solution with the maximum concentration (amount packed in) of a dissolved substance
  • solubility -- The amount of a substance that will dissolve in a certain amount of solvent at a fixed temperature
  • mixture -- A combination of two or more substances that do not combine (do not dissolve or chemically react) but remain individual substances. They can be separated by a physical means.
  • dissolve -- To break apart and mix in
  • solute -- The substance dissolved in a solution
  • solution -- A type of liquid mixture that is the same throughout
  • dilute -- A solution with a low concentration (amount packed in) of a substance

States of Matter

  • Boiling -- When a liquid substance becomes a gas. Heat is added. Ex: When you see gas bubbles in heated water.
  • Freezing -- When a liquid becomes a solid. Heat is removed Ex: When Kool-Aid becomes a popsicle
  • Melting point -- Temperature at which a substance changes from the solid state into the liquid state. Chocolate becomes a liquid at 34 °C (93 °F)
  • Liquid -- State of matter where particles are close together, but can slide past each other
  • Sublimation -- When a solid changes to a gas, and skips the liquid state. Heat is added. Ex. Dry ice never has a liquid state.
  • Condensation -- When a gas changes to a liquid or solid form of the same type of substance. Heat is removed. Ex. Beads of water on glass, your breath on a cold morning
  • Melting -- When a solid becomes a liquid. Heat is added Ex: When chocolate becomes a liquid in your hand.
  • Solid -- State of matter where particles are fixed in place but vibrate.
  • Boiling Point -- The temperature at which a substance changes from the liquid state into the gas state. Ex. Water boils at 100°C. Sugar water (50/50 mixture) boils at 102°C
  • Freezing point -- Temperature at which a liquid becomes a solid. Ex. Water freezes at 0° C or 32°F. Milk freezes at -0.5°C. or 31.1°F.
  • Evaporation: -- When a liquid becomes a gas. Heat is added Ex: When a puddle of water “disappears”
  • Gas -- State of matter where particles are far apart, and can move freely
