Computer Basics Terms

  • DATA -- The raw, unprocessed lists of items put into a computer
  • OUTPUT DEVICE -- Devices that allow the user to see, touch, and hear the results of what has been processed in the computer.
  • CPU -- Central Processing Unit (the brain of the computer)
  • Hard Disk Drive -- The large fixed storage device inside the computer that stores the main programs and is typically referred to by the drive letter C:/
  • BINARY -- The numbering system that uses 0's and 1's to interpret the data from the computer
  • INPUT DEVICE -- Devices that allow the user to put data into the computer.
  • STORAGE DEVICE -- Devices that allow you to save or keep information for later use. i.e. flash drive, floppy disk, memory card
  • ROM -- Read Only Memory- Permanent Storage area for information that the user wants to retrieve at a later time. Is non-volatile.
  • Computer -- A machine that operates under the control of its instructions that receives, stores and proccesses data into useable information that the user can see, touch or hear.
  • SOFTWARE -- The instructions or programs that tell the computer what to do.
  • INFORMATION -- The processed facts that have been converted into a useable format for humans
  • PROCESSING -- The function that occurs to turn data into useable information.
  • RAM -- Random Access Memory -Temporary storage area while the user is working with data. It is lost when the computer shuts down.
  • CD-ROM -- Disks that are written to by lasers that store large amounts of data, often music
  • HARDWARE -- The physical or tangible parts of the computer system i.e. monitor, printer, mouse, etc.
