Stingray Chaser

Poetic Tools

  • allusion -- When the speaker refers to something that the reader needs prior knowledge about to understand.
  • stanza -- A group of lines of poetry. Similar to a verse in a song or a paragraph in an essay.
  • alliteration -- The repetition of a beginning sound.
  • apostrophe -- When a speaker talks to someone or something that is not actually there.
  • metaphor -- A comparison between two unlike things that does not use the words "like" or "as".
  • assonance -- Repetition of a vowel sound.
  • juxtapostion -- Placing two things that are opposites next to each other, so the reader can compare them.
  • extend metaphor -- A metaphor that continues for several stanzas of for the whole poem.
  • consonance -- Repetition of an ending consonant sound

  • rhyme scheme -- The pattern of rhyme in a poem.
