Vocabulary (B. Jones) #1

  • summary -- The main Events in a story, or text
  • inference -- To use your clues (see, hear, etc...) and background knowledge (what you already know) to make a logical or reasonable guess
  • conflict -- The problem in a story. 1. Man vs Man; 2. Man vs Self; 3. Man vs Nature
  • text feature -- A visual image such as: titles, illustrations, captions used to help the reader explain expository text
  • paraphrasing -- To restate the same thing using different words (in a different way)
  • dialogue -- Conversation between two or more people
  • plot -- The basic sequence of events in a story. It has 3 main parts: 1. Rising action; 2. Climax; 3. Falling action
  • expository text -- Nonfiction writing written to inform, or explain something
  • main idea -- what the story, passage, or paragraph is mostly about. EX: Cats make great pets.
  • affixes -- A word part (prefix or suffix) that is added to a root word that modifies (changes) the meaning of that word
  • foreshadowing -- An authors use of hints or clues to suggest future events
  • resolution -- How the problem is solved in a story
  • purpose -- The intended goal of a piece of writing. EX: persuade, inform, entertain, express
  • summerize -- To reduce large section of text to their most important or main points

  • position -- An opinion about a particular subject. EX: I think we should have longer recess time.
  • rhyme scheme -- The pattern of rhyming lines. EX: ABAB, or ABBA
  • genre -- A word used to sort literature into groups. EX: The genre of "A Diary of a Wimpy Kid" is a fiction.
  • persuasive text -- Text written with the intent to persuade or convince the reader of something
  • internal rhyme -- A rhyme within the same line of verse. EX: from "The Raven" - Once upon a midnight dreary, while I pondered, weak and weary.
  • onomatopoeia -- The use of words that sound like what they mean. EX: buzz and purr
  • audience -- The intended target group for a message. EX: students
  • alliteration -- The repeated use of the same sounds at the beginning of a group of words. EX: "The gruesome ghost gave a ghastly groan."
